Diablo or Range OBD2: Compatibility Issues in 2017 GM Vehicles

Some users have reported compatibility issues between Diablo Or Range Obd2 devices and 2017 General Motors (GM) vehicles. Specifically, it seems that the Range module may interfere with the high volume of network data during vehicle startup, potentially causing communication errors or malfunctions. This issue appears similar to problems experienced in 2016 models. In 2017 GM vehicles, the Range device might function correctly if activated a few seconds after the initial startup, bypassing the initial data surge. This suggests that the root cause might lie in the timing of device activation relative to the vehicle’s network initialization.

GM vehicles, even without aftermarket devices, can experience similar communication issues. For instance, some 2008 CTS models occasionally exhibited audio module timeouts during startup due to network traffic overload. This often resulted in partial or complete audio system malfunction, requiring a restart to resolve the problem.

The complexity of the problem is compounded by the numerous configurations available in C7 Corvettes, including various trim levels, optional equipment, and potentially user-customized settings. This variety creates a challenging environment for testing and identifying the precise conditions that trigger the compatibility issues.

Potential solutions include manually activating the Range device with a switch, using a delay relay to postpone activation, or implementing a circuit within the Range module to detect the voltage drop associated with starter motor engagement. This last option would automatically disable the Range device for a short period during startup, allowing the vehicle’s network to initialize without interference, and maintaining the plug-and-play nature of the device. This would eliminate the need for extra wiring or user intervention.
