While waiting for boat repairs, we rented a car – the perfect vehicle for tooling around Geraldton, Western Australia. This charming city offered a welcome respite from boat chores, providing ample opportunities for exploration. From historical sites to vibrant markets, Geraldton proved to be a delightful discovery.
Exploring Geraldton’s Landmarks by Car
Our car allowed us to easily reach the HMAS Sydney II Memorial atop Mount Scott. This moving tribute commemorates the tragic loss of the ship and its crew in 1941. The granite wall listing the names of the fallen and the dome of 645 seagulls are particularly impactful. The “Waiting Woman” statue, gazing out to sea, is a poignant reminder of the families left behind.
Geraldton’s rich history as a mining town is evident in its architecture. The Old Gaol, built in 1856, now houses craft galleries, a museum, and a gemstone display. It’s fascinating to see how these historic buildings have been repurposed for modern use.
We were particularly charmed by the Freemasons Hotel, a local landmark with a history dating back to the 1870s. Originally a meeting place for Freemasons, it remains a popular hotel and pub today.
Geraldton’s Maritime Heritage and Local Markets
Geraldton’s connection to the tragic Batavia shipwreck is evident throughout the city. A replica of the Dutch longboat used by survivors is moored near the marina, offering a glimpse into this harrowing maritime history.
Even on a rainy Sunday, the Platform Market at the old Geraldton Railway Station was bustling with activity. We enjoyed browsing the local crafts and purchasing fresh produce.
Other notable sights included the Point Moore Lighthouse, the oldest surviving Commonwealth lighthouse in Western Australia, and the Pioneer Memorial Wall, a tribute to the region’s early settlers.
Having a Car For Tooling Around allowed us to fully appreciate Geraldton’s diverse attractions. It was the perfect way to experience this vibrant city while waiting for our boat repairs. Soon, our new windlass will arrive, and we’ll be back to boat chores, but we’ll cherish the memories of our time exploring Geraldton.
